Kelly Slater mastered huge perfect Banzai Pipeline today to be crowned the 2016 Volcom Pipe Pro Champion! After taking down huge names from day one, he showed no mercy against his competition, and no surprisingly, impressed the crowd and judges with his in-form style. Semifinals were stacked with Bruce Irons (HAW), Marco Giorgi (URY), Kelly Slater (USA) and Joan Duru (FRA) setting up the first heat, with Makai McNamara (HAW), Dusty Payne (HAW), Jamie O’Brien (HAW) and Tom Whitaker (AUS) completing the second heat. Makai took off on a huge Pipeline left, grabbed the rail and got blasted out by the spit to earn a well-deserved 10pt ride which took him into the final (even with an interference).
After some huge barrels and scores, the finals were set with Kelly, Bruce, Jamie and Makai. After a short break from the semifinals, it was GAME ON! With 8-12 foot perfect offshore Pipeline, the boys held back nothing, battling wave-for-wave for a chance at the 2016 crown. There were some heavy wipeouts early with Makai taking a couple heavy beatings and breaking his board, but was able to get his backup board for another shot. Makai was able to snag a high 8-point ride, but it was Kelly who coupled a 7.83 and 8.73 mid-heat to hold the lead. There were some last-minute chances, but none could compare to Kelly’s amazing waves, and ended up taking the big win!
